Harold Raeburn (1865 1926) who mapped many of Scotland's mountain routes and Gothic style church architect Hippolyte Jean Blanc (1844 1917). IT is a grave business, but moves are finally coming together to preserve and make better use of Edinburgh's historic and fascinating cemeteries. As well as Warriston Cemetery, Edinburgh City Council owns the once private Victorian garden cemeteries at Merchiston, Dalry and Newington. It's hoped that "friends" groups can be established at those too with a view to maintaining them for future generations. But like an advance guard, you always know when there is bad news on the pensions front because the prospect of a universal state pension worth 140 a week is dangled before the public, to take the sting out of the latest announcement. It happened with the launch of Nest, the new quasi compulsory scheme which will compel all employees to contribute to a private pension, which may be worth precious little to many of them.
the Red Lady because of its red glass roof and sculpture of a reclining woman, but was demolished in the Eighties due to vandalism. deafening silence followed. Until last week, that is. Again on the eve of publication of the Hutton review, which hardly spells good news for six million state employees, the universal pension raised its tantalising head again. This time a speech by pensions secretary Iain Duncan Smith was trailed as promising you got it, a Nike Kyrie 3 universal pension for all of 140 per person, etc. Even I fell for it. Maybe at last they are serious.
Imagine my disappointment when I read the speech which, I am sorry to have to tell you, said nothing at all about a universal pension worth 140, only about the need to reform the state system. Don't get me wrong. I am a firm supporter of the concept of a universal pension. With it, Nest can be made to work to the benefit of individuals and the public purse. Without it, Nest will prove worse than useless, and I can only rejoice that I will be long retired before the first accounts mature in any meaningful way. But to put all our hopes in a universal pension is as misguided as trusting the universal soldier who says he's fighting for the peace of all. By no means will it turn out to be a windfall for all. A universal pension will roll up any.
Unless you opt out, it will be another tax for questionable future benefit. So just before the Nest launch, pensions minister Steve Webb promised a universal pension of 140 for all, or a bit over 200 for couples. A Nike Kobe 11 Elite Black
